Standing in the insect repellent aisle can make your eyes cross with all the options. Which ones work? Which ones are safe? As our outdoor activity brings us in contact with many blood feeding bugs, it is important to know which products to choose, how to use them and what not to waste our hard earn money on.
Important information on using repellents:
- Check the container to ensure that the product bears an EPA-approved label and registration number. Never use a product that has not been approved for use by the EPA!
- I know I know, but you need to do it: Read the entire label before using a repellent. Even if you have used it before, read the label again-don't trust your memory.
- Follow the use directions carefully. Use only the amount directed, at the time and under the conditions specified, and for the purpose listed.
- As with most chemicals, store repellents away from children.
- Clip-on repellent devises that use battery powered fans to circulate repellent around the body, outdoor foggers, candles, and coils have not been found to be effective.
- Studies have demonstrated that electronic mosquito repellers are useless.
